First responders serve on the front lines, heroically risking their own safety and wellbeing. While they received the spotlight throughout the pandemic (and they deserved it), it’s important to keep these hard workers feeling honored, respected, and cared for. High stress and trauma are part of their reality, so handwritten thank you notes (and food gift certificates) are a wonderful way to say, “Our community is grateful!”
First Responders in Our Communities
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 4.5 million first responders in the US, encompassing police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. The average first responder works a full 2,080 hours a year, translating to long shifts and demanding schedules.
Many first responders skip meals, eat in their vehicles, or opt for quick food options. One great way to support this hungry population is to make mealtime easier, cheaper — and maybe even healthier!
We suggest bringing grocery gift certificates or fruits and vegetables gift certificates by their stations, headquarters, or offices. They are the perfect way to support local agencies, help them save some money, and make sure they’re fueled up for the job.
One idea is to coordinate a volunteer afternoon for your team! Ask employees to select the first responders they’d like to honor and set a budget to purchase a certain number of gift certificates to hand out. Head out together one afternoon and spread the gratitude!
What Can a “Thank You” Provide to Local First Responders?
-
Shows Appreciation: First responders put their lives on the line every day for our safety and well-being. A gift, even a small one, is a way to express gratitude for their courage, dedication, and sacrifice.
-
Boosts Morale: The job of a first responder can be stressful and demanding. Receiving a gift can be a bright spot in their day, reminding them that their community appreciates their service.
-
Supports Their Well-being: Many first responders work long hours and have unpredictable schedules. A gift certificate for food or a meal service can ease the burden of meal planning and allow them to focus on their well-being.
-
Strengthens Community Bonds: Giving gifts to first responders helps build positive relationships between the community and those who serve it. It fosters a sense of shared responsibility and appreciation.
-
Raises Awareness: Public recognition of first responders, through gifts and other gestures, can raise awareness of the challenges they face and the importance of their role.
