Gift Ideas for The People on Your List That “Don’t Want Anything”

Gifts for the person who "Doesn't want anything."

Let gThankYou help you pick a gift for the person who "doesn't want anything,"

The holidays are a happy time but can also be very stressful.  We all have that person on our list for whom gift buying is impossible.  The best gifts are thoughtful gifts, but the pressure to come up with something unique for people who refuse to give you any ideas is frustrating. Cash or gift cards seem like a possible route, but they can feel cold or transactional.

To assist you with this difficult situation, we’ve come up with a list of gifts for the people who “don’t want anything.”

An experience gift can create lasting memories and strengthen relationships. Most of the time when someone says that they don’t want anything, what they usually mean is they don’t want to bring another product into their space.  If this is the situation with someone on your list, we suggest you focus on experiences.

Experience gifts can create lasting memories and strengthen relationships.  They are also an opportunity for you to give someone something that they might not try on their own.  Lastly, they can be eco-friendly and don’t involve adding clutter or unwanted products into someone’s life.

If the person is close by and you enjoy spending time with them, think about an experience that involves the both of you.

Dine Out

Wrap a photo frame with a picture of the menu or restaurant you want to take them to.

This will give the recipient something to open while simultaneously providing an experience in the future.  During the dinner/lunch/event that you have selected, take a photo of the two of you and have it printed out to put in the frame.

Relaxation day

A spa day, or a trip to the nail salon can be a fabulous gift.  Even a day at the chiropractor could be a great day for someone that complains about aches and pains.

Photo of a happy moment

A photo in an actual frame is a rare thing nowadays.  Many times, we have great photos of people and events that we shared with them, but we don’t take the time to get them off our phone.  Gifting a photo in a beautiful frame of a time that you shared with that person can be a meaningful and wonderful gift.

Book travel or a trip

According to a survey of experience-based gifts, the category that people desire most are travel or trips. These can include vacation-type gifts, but if that isn’t in your budget, the survey found that recipients also enjoyed trips to a museum, show, or concert. Even a trip to a local park or nearby cross-country skiing can be a low-cost but high-reward gift.

If you are looking for a gift for a person in your life where an experience isn’t a good option, think about other gifts that are meaningful, but don’t take up space.

Make or repair something

You don’t have to be an artist to create a meaningful gift for a loved one.  Cookies, with a copy of your favorite recipe or a drawing can be a great gift.  Another option is to repair a broken thing for them. Almost everyone has a ripped screen, loose handle, or other household chores that need to be completed. Take the day and fix all the things you are comfortable completing. I promise that will be a gift they really appreciate. You might feel awkward about putting your handiwork out there, but people will appreciate the effort.

Think about the Outdoors

One of the best gifts I received was a packet of seeds from a friend’s garden flowers from the summer season.  She had removed them from the flower (think marigold, sunflower, zinnia) and put them in a beautiful envelope.  Not only were they delightful to open, but I got to think of her all summer long as they bloomed.  Another friend gives hostas that she has split from her garden in a pretty basket.

Fill their Gas Tank

If you have access to their car (don’t steal it), take a moment and fill up their gas tank. This is one of those expenses and activities that no one enjoys and could be a very welcome and useful gift for someone on your list.

Food

For people that don’t want to accumulate “stuff,” the gift of food is A Year of Cheera great idea. Everyone needs to eat! Food gifts can be tricky if you don’t know what their tastes buds are or if they have dietary concerns.  Food also doesn’t wrap or travel well in many instances. We have found that these certificates, which are usable at ANY grocery store for ANY brand, give people a lot of choice around what food they want to acquire.  Plus, it saves you from handling food or trying to curate a fancy food basket when you know half the stuff won’t ever be eaten.

Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the holidays get you down. With a little creativity, you can create a thoughtful gift for everyone on your list.  Even the impossible-to-buy-for-people can be delighted this holiday season!
